This uninhabited atoll is a possssion of the United States. This island is only 1.64 km² large and is low lying – the highest point is only 8 m above the sea level. There are no trees – just grass and low-growing shrubs.
Whole island is protected territory – this remote piece of dry land is used by numerous sea birds and turtles for nesting and once was used for guano mining. Now people are coming here rarely. Here are remains of a failed settlement with graveyard from 1930ies, an overgrown runway and small day beacon.
It is interesting to note that one marine mollusc – Engina tuberculosa – was collected here once in 1862 and it seems that it is not found anywhere else.
