The news about the giant Maekgwe Baobab reached South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry in early 2009 and experts still need to go to the place and confirm the record numbers of this tree. Whatever the final results will be, such news are exciting and promising - there is hope that one day new world's stoutest tree could be found in this part of Africa.

Happily the area around Maekgwe has got excellent Google Earth coverage, the crown diameter of individual trees can be measured! Wondermondo looked around and in large area around Maekgwe the only tree with a crown wider than 30m is the one seen on this map. There are high chances that this is the giant baobab of Maekgwe.
