Several beautiful islands in the Indian ocean form the state of Mauritius. These islands are distant from each other and very diverse.
Until recent times highlights of Mauritius (and Rodrigues island) were the large, flightless birds – dodo and Rodrigues Solitaire. Both were exterminated by people and introduced animals.
The remaining natural and man-made heritage in islands is diverse – here are found breathtaking sceneries, unique ecosystems, fine waterfalls, historical palaces.

Geological wonders
Le Morne Brabant
Mauritius
An impressive basaltic monolith that rises up to 556 m high above the sea and other parts of Mauritius. In the early 19th century numerous escaped slaves formed a community, living on the plateau of this mountain and in caves in its sides. The only place where the beautiful flowering bush Trochetia boutoniana grows.
Seven Coloured Earths
Mauritius
Site with an eerie landscape, formed by dunes that are colored in seven distinct colors – blue, brown, green, purple, red, violet, and yellow.
Tamarind Falls (Tamarin Falls)
Mauritius
An impressive cascade that consists of seven vertical plunges. The total height is around 250 m. Located in one of the last pristine forests in Mauritius.
Rochester Falls
Mauritius
Picturesque, approximately 10 m tall waterfall that is cascading down over vertical basalt columns.
Le Souffleur in Mauritius
Mauritius
Blowhole in volcanic cliffs. It “works” only at certain weather conditions – but then the water shoots up to 15 – 18 m high. Most images of the visitors though show a general wave action around the cliffs and not the blowhole.
Caverne Legat

Fine show cave with stalactites and stalagmites. Giant tortoises live in the ravine at its entrance.
Pont Bon Dieu
Mauritius
Natural bridge over a system of lava caves. This bridge is some 80 m long and around 50 m wide. The height of the ceiling is 15 m or more.
Biological wonders
Caverne Patate
Rodrigues
The longest cave in Mauritius, 1 140 m long. It is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is known since the 18th century and there have been found bones of extinct animals. Legends about the treasure hidden in it.
Bois dentelle
Mauritius
Location with Elaeocarpus bojeri (R.E. Vaughan) that is represented in the wild by just two trees. The tree has beautiful bell-formed white flowers.
Round Island
Mauritius
This small island (1.69 km²) contains three species of reptiles found only here and the endemic bottle palm Hyophorbe lagenicaulis.
Pandanus pseudomontanus in Le Puce
Mauritius
The only two existing trees of this species. Both are male plants.
Mare aux Songes
Mauritius
Swamp with valuable fossils of extinct Mauritian fauna. Bones of some 300 dodos have been found here, but most remnants belong to extinct Cylindraspis turtles.

Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
Mauritius
Beautiful tropical garden with numerous rare plants. The garden was set in 1767.
Villebague palace
Mauritius
Exquisite palace, built in 1740.
State House of Mauritius (Chateau du Reduit)
Mauritius
The official residence of the President of Mauritius. The current palace was built in 1779.
Mon Plaisir palace
Mauritius
An old palace in Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. Constructed in 1735.
Aapravasi Ghat
Mauritius
A complex of buildings that were constructed for a contracted workforce from India – an experiment of the British Empire to replace slavery. Buildings were constructed in the 1860s and mark a significant turn in the global economy.
