Sint Eustatius is a special municipality of the Kingdom of Netherlands.

This small island has remarkable history - it was the neutral trade center of Caribbean in the 18th century and Oranjestad was one of the busiest ports in the world at this time. Much of colonial heritage is lost now, but some values remain.

  • Crater of the Quill - rainforest in the deep crater of Quill volcano, developed since the last eruption which took place around 250 AD. Rainforest is very rich with rare species, although just a few are endemics. Rims of the crater rise 300 m above the bottom of crater.
  • Fort de Windt - historical fortification from the 18th century, well maintained and restored. Here are located four cannons and opens a beautiful view to St. Kitts.
  • Fort Oranje - fortification from the 17th century, well maintained, with cannons. Built in the site of an earlier French fort.
  • Gezaghebber House - oldest residential building in Oranjestad, a wooden colonial building from the 18th century.
  • Honen Dalim Synagogue - ruins of one of the oldest synagogues in America. Constructed in 1739, now in ruins, although there are plans to rebuild it.
  • Oranjestad historical center - restored centre of once important trade center in Caribbean. Oranjestad was one of the busiest ports in the world in the 18th century. Most historical buildings have been lost or are in ruins but the core part of the town has many valuable colonial buildings from the 18th - 19th century.
  • Oranjestad Reformed Church - Protestant church, built in 1774/75. Walls of the basement are up to 6 m thick.
