Caverne Patate
The longest cave in Mauritius, 1 140 m long. It is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is known since the 18th century and here have been found bones of extinct animals. Legends about the treasure hidden in it.
Gorham’s Cave
One of four caves in Gorham’s Cave complex. Cave has formed in Jurassic limestone and has an 18 m thick layer of sediments that contain very important finds including the latest find of Neanderthals who lived here 60 – 24 thousand years ago when the sea was far away from the cave and the area was rich with resources. This is the last known settlement of Neanderthals in the world. The time of their habitation includes an incision of eight lines, made at least 39,000 years ago, most likely made by Neanderthals – the oldest known abstract drawing in the world. 23 thousand years ago here started to live modern humans, who left some paintings on the walls of the cave. Phoenicians and Carthaginians used this cave as their shrine, leaving offerings here.
Cavannagh Cave
The site where remnants of extinct giant rodent Amblyrhiza inundata were found in the 19th century. This deer-sized animal lived some 125 000 years ago, at lower sea level. It is possible that these remnants were found in other local caves as well.
Milodon Cave (Cueva del Milodón)
In this cave were found remnants of the giant ground sloth (Mylodon darwini) and several more extinct South American animals.
Wakulla Spring
One of the most impressive cold water springs in the world, the diameter of this spring pool is 96 meters, its depth is 56.4 meters. One of the most powerful springs in the world, its discharge has reached up to 54,226 liters per second. The water coming out of it has formed a very extensive freshwater cave system.
Kalambo Falls
221 – 235 m tall, single plunge waterfall. The second tallest uninterrupted fall in Africa. Important archaeological site – a site of human settlement since 300 000 BC, starting from Acheulian culture.
Dinosaur Cove
The richest find of dinosaur remnants in Australia. Here were discovered the first polar dinosaurs and the first southern tyrannosaurs.
