Forest on Robinson Crusoe Island

Alerce Milenario in Monumento Alerce Costero

Giant alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides I.M.Johnst.) with trunk circumference 11.4 m, diameter – 4.2 m, over 60 m tall.

Grand Bois, Amsterdam Island

The only remnant of the dense forest of Phylica arborea – an subantarctic tree. This forest covers 8 ha, earlier, before the human inflicted forest fires it covered large part of the island.

Niau tropical forest – feo

One of the rare areas covered with a specific ecosystem – Tuamotu tropical moist forest. The whole island – atoll is some 20 km² large. The island has a green, hypersaline lagoon. The only habitat of the very rare Tuamotu kingfisher (Todiramphus gambieri).

Vailulu’u Eel City and Moat of Death

A hydrothermal vent in the summit of an enormous submarine volcano rises 4,200 m from the ocean floor. The Nafanue volcanic cone in the center of the 400 m deep caldera contains a group of hydrothermal vents inhabited by numerous eels (Dysommina rugosa). This is unusual – in general vertebrates do not live near hydrothermal vents.

Wakulla Spring

One of the most impressive cold water springs in the world, the diameter of this spring pool is 96 meters, its depth is 56.4 meters. One of the most powerful springs in the world, its discharge has reached up to 54,226 liters per second. The water coming out of it has formed a very extensive freshwater cave system.

Kalambo Falls

221 – 235 m tall, single plunge waterfall. The second tallest uninterrupted fall in Africa. Important archaeological site – a site of human settlement since 300 000 BC, starting from Acheulian culture.

Tandridge Yew

A magnificent yew tree with a 10.92 m trunk circumference at the ground level, grows in the church garden.

Crowhurst Yew, Surrey

An enormous yew tree with a trunk circumference of 10.24 m. The tree has a hollow that can be entered through a door.

Ashbrittle Yew

A giant yew tree in the church garden. The yew has 7 separate trunks. The girth of the whole group of trees is 12.17 m. It is considered that the tree grows on a Bronze Age barrow.
