Škocjan caves
Cave system with numerous unique characteristics: giant, 146 meters deep underground canyon of River Reka, underground travertine terraces, Bronze Age and later temples, and Pre-Christian pilgrimage center.
Bimmah sinkhole
Approximately 30 m deep sinkhole with a deep blue lake in it. A beloved place for swimming, the best-known sinkhole in Oman.
Le Trou de David
A former sinkhole at the sea, with two natural arches towards the sea. In calm weather, one could swim into this sinkhole from the sea. Collapsed in December 2011.
Animal Flower Cave
Partly submerged cave with yellow sea anemones and beautiful views on the ocean from its entrance.
Hato Caves
Show caves, with many petroglyphs engraved by Amerindian people, prehistoric burials. Caves are adorned with many stalactites, stalagmites, other dripstone formations. Remnants of extinct animals.
Aripo Main Cave, Trinidad
Biggest cave system on the island, 862 m long. Contains small tufa waterfall. Colonies of oil birds and bats. Six new insect species have been first described in this cave.
Cavannagh Cave
The site where remnants of extinct giant rodent Amblyrhiza inundata were found in the 19th century. This deer-sized animal lived some 125 000 years ago, at lower sea level. It is possible that these remnants were found in other local caves as well.
Boiling Hole in Lake Catherine
A deep cave that starts some meters below the water in Lake Catherine. Explored 206 m long passage, a strong current in the cave.
Grotta dello Smeraldo – Emerald Grotto
Partly submerged cave in Amalfi Coast, Italy. Sunlight enters the cave indirectly – through the seawater and most of the visible spectrum is absorbed. Thus the water in one corner of the cave shines in a beautiful emerald green-blue color.
