Unusual fumaroles
The most amazing and unusual fumaroles – openings in the ground where heated gases and vapors are emitted.
Kawah Ijen
Turquoise-colored, extremely acid lake with a diameter of 1 km. Acidity – 0.5 pH. Nearly pure deposits of sulfur are located in the caldera. The burning sulfuric gas creates a very impressive blue flame in the night.
North-West Eifuku Champagne Vent
A submarine vent on a volcano that emits almost pure liquid carbon dioxide at 1,600 m depth. Such phenomenon is known in three places on Earth and at Eifuku it is most abundant.
North-Western solfatara field of Shiashkotan
An interesting geothermal field where in 2007 was discovered a geyser-like spring named "Chornij Drakon" (Black Dragon). Here is located also a spouter "Geizernij" that on a regular basis spurts 1 – 1.5 m high jet of gas and water.
Boiling Lake
Flooded fumarole, filled with bubbling greyish-blue water and enveloped in steam. The diameter of this lake is some 63 m. The temperature of the water is 82 – 100 C°. In the late 19th century in the center of the lake formed a geyser that was up to 18 m high. Second largest boiling lake in the world.
Krysuvik – Seltun geothermal area (Krýsuvík – Seltún)
Spectacular geothermal fields right on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Hot springs, solfataras, fumaroles, and colored soil.
Gunnuhver geothermal area
A geothermal field with mud pools and fumaroles, former geysers. A legend about a ghost that was dragged in the fumarole.
Buranga Hot Springs
Perpetual spouter! The most impressive geothermal region in Uganda with hot springs and a geyser-like fountain of hot water – Mumbuga erupting spring. In dry season here appear also fumaroles.
Soborom geothermal field and Yerike hot spring
Large geothermal field with fumaroles, mud pots, boiling water. Some reports about geysers.
Poas Volcano and Laguna Caliente
Very active and unusual volcano with Laguna Caliente – lake of extreme acidity reaching up to 0.0 of pH. Frequent phreatic eruptions may eject this acid up to 1 kilometer high. Around the volcano, all the vegetation is stunted brown and black by the extremely acid clouds coming from this lake.
