Site of a native American city which flourished around 1050 – 1350 AD. Some 80 man-made mounds remain in the central part of this city which was one of the world’s largest around 1100. The largest and most influential city of the Mississippian culture, the most significant pre-Columbian urban center north of Mexico. Remains of the city contain some outstanding monuments, such as Monks Mond – the largest pre-Columbian earthwork in the Americas.
