Hypersaline lakes beneath the Devon Ice Cap
Two very unusual lakes under the thick ice of Devon Island. These lakes, most likely, are hypersaline and not freezing at the temperature that is constantly below -10.5°C.
Cenote Angelita or… “The Nightmare”
Unique water-filled sinkhole with a ghostly layer of hydrogen sulfate at the depth of some 30 m and seawater below it.
Ikaite tufa columns in Ikka Fjord
Almost unique phenomenon – submarine tufa columns created by cold seeps from submarine springs. Columns are formed of ikaite – an unstable mineral that disintegrates in temperatures above 6 – 7 ° C. In total there are more than 600 such columns up to 18 m tall.
Giant Forest, California
Unique forest with stands of giant sequoia trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum) – the largest trees in the world. This is the easiest to access sequoia grove but also contains the largest trees – five of the ten largest trees on Earth are located in this grove. Area – 7.6 km2. In California are located several more notable groves of these giant trees.
Multnomah Falls
Very tall waterfall with three main drops, 194 m tall. A picturesque bridge between below the tallest drop.
Virginia Falls (Na’ili Cho)
Last primeval large waterfall in North America. Here the powerful South Nahanni falls 90 meters, the width of falls reaches 259 m. Some 120 m tall spire of rock – Mason’s Rock – stands in the middle of the falls.
Raven’s Tower (Sitka spruce)
Raven’s Tower is a very tall Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), 96.7 m tall.
Doerner Fir
The tallest coast Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) in the world. Height 99.8 m, diameter 3.54 m, volume 237 m3. Some time ago it was 100.3 m tall.
