The longest lava cave in Arizona, 1.21 km long.
Grand Canyon Caverns
Cave with enormous cave rooms. Contains remnants of some extinct animals, e.g. ground sloth. Caves can be accessed through a 64 m deep shaft while the natural entrance has been sealed off as it is a sacred place to Hualapai people.
Kartchner Caverns
This gorgeous cave was discovered in 1974. The cave contains amazing and even unique cave formations, the process of their formation continues. Here is located one of the world’s longest soda straws: 647 cm long! The length of the cave passages is some 3.9 – 4 km.
Colossal Cave
Large cave system with a total length of explored passages at 5.6 km.
Montezuma Well
Large sinkhole, 112 m wide and 17 m deep. It is fed by powerful springs and its water has a high level of dissolved arsenic. In the sinkhole live at least five endemic organisms.
Kaumana Caves
One of the numerous lava caves in Hawaii Islands, one of the easiest to access. Kaumana Cave is 2 196 m long and the main entrance leads through a collapsed skylight. Cave formed in 1881 when the lava flow almost eliminated Hilo.
Makauwahi Cave
The largest limestone cave in Hawaii, the richest fossil finds in the Pacific. Graveyard of ancient Hawaiians. The cave contains a sinkhole with a lake. This lake contains a 10,000 years-long history of sedimentation thus providing a very detailed and precise timeline of a natural evolution in Hawai’i. Here have been found remnants of numerous species of extinct birds.
Kazumura Cave
The longest lava tube in the world, 65.5 km long and up to 1,102 m deep.
Chumash Painted Cave
Small sandstone cave with red, white and black paintings that depict the cosmology of Chumash people. Age is unknown, between 200 and 1000 years.
Ursa Minor
This beautiful cave was discovered in 2006. The ceiling of the cave is sparkling due to millions of small crystals. The cave is rich with rare speleothems – several meters long soda straws, cave pearls, and others.
