Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

Near the entrance into Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, Philippines

More than 24 km long cave system with 8.4 kilometers long underground river, which is accessible directly from the sea and navigable up to 4.2 km deep. Contains also Italian’s Chamber – a giant cave hall.

Le Bone de Leproserie

A magnificent sinkhole that starts with some 50 m deep well and then continues with a 40 m deep lake. The entrance is only 25 m wide but the lake at its base is 160 m wide. Contains 350,000 m³ of freshwater.

Trou de Bone

Impressive, 40 m deep sinkhole with a lake at its bottom. The roots of banyan trees are hanging down the cliff and reach the water.

Cherokee Sink

Cherokee Sink, Florida

A rounded jade green pool, 90 by 50 m large, surrounded by 0.5 – 9 m high cliffs. It has steep sides under the water as well and is up to 24.4 m deep. The sinkhole was formed by a collapse of the cave chamber and most likely was considerably deeper in the past.

Poas Volcano and Laguna Caliente

Very active and unusual volcano with Laguna Caliente – lake of extreme acidity reaching up to 0.0 of pH. Frequent phreatic eruptions may eject this acid up to 1 kilometer high. Around the volcano, all the vegetation is stunted brown and black by the extremely acid clouds coming from this lake.

Paasselkä devils

Light phenomena occasionally appearing above Lake Paasselkä and areas near it, mentioned since the 18th century. Usually, it is a ball of light that sometimes behaves as if has its own will. Paasselkä lake has formed in a meteorite crater.

Roopkund – Skeleton Lake

The mysterious Roopkund Lake, India

At this glacial lake at great height were found more than 500 skeletons of pilgrims. These people died around the 12th – 15th century AD. Further studies of the damages to their skulls have shown that these people died from sudden hailstorms – there was no shelter and people died from falling iceballs.

Modro Jezero – Blue Lake

A giant collapse structure – sinkhole. Its depth is 290 m. At the bottom for the most part of the year is seen deep blue lake – a popular swimming place.

Crveno Jezero – Red Lake

One of the most impressive sinkholes in the world: deep shaft with a lake at the bottom. The total depth of the sinkhole is some 530 m, it contains a 280 – 290 m deep lake with endemic fish.
