Boiling Lake

Boiling Lake, Dominica

Flooded fumarole, filled with bubbling greyish-blue water and enveloped in steam. The diameter of this lake is some 63 m. The temperature of the water is 82 – 100 C°. In the late 19th century in the center of the lake formed a geyser that was up to 18 m high. Second largest boiling lake in the world.

Aripo Main Cave, Trinidad

Biggest cave system on the island, 862 m long. Contains small tufa waterfall. Colonies of oil birds and bats. Six new insect species have been first described in this cave.

Cavannagh Cave

The site where remnants of extinct giant rodent Amblyrhiza inundata were found in the 19th century. This deer-sized animal lived some 125 000 years ago, at lower sea level. It is possible that these remnants were found in other local caves as well.

The richest finds of the fluorescent Dominican blue amber- a stone that changes its color according to lighting conditions. Dominican amber (but not the blue one) is found also in many other mines in three regions – La Cordillera Septentrional, Bayaguana and Sabana de la Mer.
