Near the summit of Haleakalā volcano, in alpine desert grow unusual plants. These plants – Haleakala silverswords (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrocephalum) – grow up to 2 meters tall and flower once per 15 – 50 years. This is the only find of this succulent plant.
