Kanas Lake Monsters

According to legends in this lake live giant fish or similar creatures that are some 10 – 15 m long. These animals have been caught on video, including an aerial that shows a group of some 15 creatures crossing the lake (2012).

Antiphonitis church

Interesting medieval church with a dome resting on eight pillars. Interior of the church is adorned with frescoes, the oldest were made in the 12th century.

Jōmon Sugi (Jomon Sugi)

Largest and oldest sugi tree (Cryptomeria japonica (L.f.) D.Don). Circumference 16.4 m, height 25.3 m. At least 2,000 years old.

Kpalimé Falls

Some 100 m tall waterfall.

Yamoussoukro Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

The largest church in the world, one of the newest basilicas, constructed in 1989, 158 meters high.

Bobo Dioulasso Grand Mosque

Large mosque in Sudano-Sahelian style, built in 1882 (1883?).

Goree Island (Gorée Island)

One of the oldest European settlements in Africa, established in 1444. A small island that is covered with historical buildings. Although it is known as the slave trade center, it had relatively minor importance in this respect.

Wassu stone circles

Group of 11 stone circles and other megaliths, erected in the time period between the 7th and 9th century AD. Stones are up to 2.5 m high, there are later burials inside the circles.

Ancient Carthage

Once very important, legendary city, established as Phoenician colony in the 9th century BC. Carthage as the capital of Punic culture was the main rival of emerging Rome and finally was destroyed by Romans in 146 BC. Then it was reestablished by Romans and destroyed by Muslims in 698 AD.

Leptis Magna

Some of the best preserved Roman ruins. This city was founded by Phoenicians around 1000 BC and in the 1st century AD was incorporated into Roman Empire. Abandoned sometimes around 650 AD.
