Across the northern part of Florida goes a terrace – an ancient sea coast named Cody Scarp. Near the base of this terrace have formed many of the giant springs of Florida.

Wacissa Springs Group belongs to these springs. This is a group of seven closely located giant springs: Wacissa 1-4, Log, Thomas, and Aucilla Springs. Together they form a large river – the Wacissa River. This river since the beginning is some 100 m wide and has incredibly lucid water.

Description of Wacissa Springs Group

Log Spring is the westernmost spring in the Wacissa Springs Group. It flows from a limestone fissure and is up to 7.7 m deep.

Thomas Spring is below Log Spring and also is a limestone fissure, up to 2.4 m deep. It has an output of some 850 l/s.

Wacissa Spring No. 1 is further below Thomas Spring and is up to 2.9 m deep.

Wacissa Spring No. 2 is the central spring at the boat ramp. It has up to 2.4 m deep spring pool.

Wacissa Spring No. 3 is to the east of the car parking area and has a shallow, up to 0.6 m deep pool over it.

Wacissa Spring No. 4 is south of the previous spring and is some 1.3 m deep.

Further below along the Wacissa River are located other springs. The most famous among them is Wacissa Big Blue Spring – a gorgeous, deep blue spring that is surrounded by the lush Floridian swamp forest.

Wacissa River flows some 19 km until it falls into Aucilla River. Further below its waters become a part of another giant spring or, technically, river rise: Nutall Rise.

Wacissa Springs Group is accessible by car and boat. Next to the springs is a car parking area, a recreational area, and a boat ramp. The springs themselves are not too noticeable, but the area is picturesque and a canoe ride in the lucid water might be very interesting, especially if one is interested in the rich wildlife in the surrounding forest and in the river.

Wacissa Springs Group is included in the list of Outstanding Florida Springs – a list of 24 unique springs.

Springs

Powerful natural freshwater springs belong to the most fascinating monuments of nature. Even more exciting is the diversity of unusual springs – mineral springs, hot springs, submarine springs as well as the unusual black smokers. Especially beautiful are such natural rarities as travertine, silica, or salt terraces created by warm and hot springs and, especially, geysers.

Backroads of Paradise: A Journey to Rediscover Old Florida

In the 1930s, the Federal Writers’ Project sent mostly anonymous writers, but also Zora Neale Hurston and Stetson Kennedy, into the depths of Florida to reveal its splendor to the world. The FWP and the State of Florida jointly published the results as Florida: A Guide to the Southernmost State, which included twenty-two driving tours of the state’s main roads. Eventually, after Eisenhower built the interstates, drivers bypassed the small towns that thrived along these roads in favor of making better time.

Those main roads are now the state’s backroads—forgotten by all but local residents, a few commuters, and dedicated road-trippers. Retracing the original routes in the Guide, Cathy Salustri rekindles our notions of paradise by bringing a modern eye to the historic travelogues.
